The P3 rear visibility lighting system:

  • works on any motorcycle
  • easy to install - typical installation takes 30-40 minutes
  • includes a controller, pair of LED modules, installation manual, programming cards, and all necessary wire connectors and mounting hardware

The two LED modules included with the system are usually mounted on either side of the motorcycle's license plate, although they can be mounted anywhere at the rear of the motorcycle. Aluminum brackets, stainless steel screws and stainless steel self-locking nuts are provided for this purpose.

The wires from the LED modules are then run up and under the seat of the motorcycle.

The P3 controllers (IQ-260 & IQ-260-D) can power up to 3 amps of additional lamps, and the P3-TS controllers (IQ-260-TS & IQ-260-D-TS) can power up to 6 amps (3 per side left and right).

Tools required include a 7 mm or adjustable wrench, a Phillips screwdriver and any tools needed to gain access to the tail and brake light wires. These wires are usually accessed by removing the seat or the tail light housing.

ORIENTING AND SECURING DECELEROMETER VERSIONS OF THE CONTROLLER
Proper functioning of the decelerometer capabilities it is critical to install and secure the controller in the proper physical orientation. The wiring instructions are the same as those below.

P3 - Taillight and Brake light
The red wire from the controller is connected to your vehicle's tail light (or any other switched 12V source).

The white wire is connected to the brake light wire.

The black wire is connected to any ground connection.

If you have the turn signal option skip to the diagram below.

The red wires (silver prior to 5/20) from the LED modules are connected to the gray/green wire from the controller.

The black wires (copper prior to 5/20) from the LED modules are connected to ground along with the black wire.

P3-TS Tail/Brake light & Turn Signals
The green and yellow wires from the controller are connected to the wires powering your vehicle's left and right turn signals, respectively, as shown in Figure 1a..

The gray/green and gray/yellow wires are connected to the red wires (silver prior to 5/20) on the left and right LED modules respectively.

The black wires (copper prior to 5/20) from the LED modules are connected to ground along with the black wire.

NOTE: There are no special wiring instructions for the decelerometer versions of the IQ-260 controllers. However, the decelerometer controller needs to be secured differently. Click here for details.

Test the P3 Lights by turning on your ignition and activating the brake lever. If the installation has been done correctly, the LED modules will light up as a modulated tail light (or, for the voltmeter model, display the battery voltage), and flash brightly as the brake lever is activated. If the LED modules do not behave as described, please consult the P3 section of our FAQ.

Our P3 rear visibility systems can be installed on any brand of motorcycle.

Wiring color tables for some selected motorcycles

Note: On motorcycles that have an LED tail light with only two wires going to it, connect the black P3 control module wire to the ground wire on the tail light, the white P3 control module wire to the non-ground wire going to the tail light, and the red P3 control module wire to the license plate light wire or to another switched source of 12 volts.

On the BMW R1200ST, the P3 controller may be pushed in from the rear beside the tail light reflector.
On the BMW R1150GS, the P3 controller fits neatly into the rear-most space under the seat.

Note: On some BMW models it is not possible to use the tail light wire to power P3 controller.
Please use the links below for detailed instructions.

Connecting to Stock Tail/Brake Lights
The IQ-260 controller in the P3 system may also be connected to the bike's tail and brake light with or without our LED modules.

Cut the wires connecting the stock tail and brake light to the motorcycle's wiring between where you connected the red and white wires and the lights. Connect the ends going to the lights to the gray/green wire on the IQ-260 as shown in Figure 2. The rear lamp will then behave just like the P3 Lights' LEDs, with our unique conspicuity flicker and a flashing brake light.

NOTE 1: A turn signal version of the controller, IQ-260-TS, IQ-260-D-TSor IQ-260-TS+ cannot be used with the stock tail/brake lights.

NOTE 2: On bikes that monitor bulb continuity a load resistor will be needed on the other cut end of the wires to prevent lamp fault errors.

P3 Programming Details

The firmware version is shown on the label of your controller, in the area circled in the controller photos. The instructions below are for our current version 10 firmware, which is listed as v10 on the label.

You can change program modes quickly and easily at any time, using your brake lever.

Our P3 rear system offers:
• 3 brake light modes
• 3 emergency flasher modes
• 4 tail light modes
• 6 decelerometer modes (on "D" controllers only)

P3 programming for current version (v10 and higher)

1) With the ignition on, tap and release the brake lever 4 times (each tap must be less than 1 second long and no more than 2 seconds apart)

2) Make sure to wait 5 or 6 seconds after you enter the 4 brake taps for the 4 flashes of the LEDs that indicate the controller has entered programming mode.

3) Within 2 seconds after the 4 flashes tap and release the brake the number of times corresponding to the mode that you want (each tap less than 1 second long and no more than 2 seconds apart). The 16 different modes are listed on the cards included with your system and in the image of the programming card on the right.

4) Wait 5 or 6 seconds after you enter your mode selection brake taps for the controller to respond with 2 flashes before you activate the brake again to try out the new setting.

5) The system is now ready for normal use in the new mode. All settings are programmed independently and are retained after the ignition is switched off.

6) If the lights have not changed to the new mode please repeat steps 1 through 4 above being deliberate with the brake taps. Also be sure to begin brake taps within 2 seconds after the four flashes.

Programming for Decelerometer Sensitivity

The "D" versions of the controller also have the additional settings in the table on the right. These decelerometer sensitivity modes are set the same way as described above.
